Nottinghamshire is a county located in the East Midlands bordering Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire. The county has a population just exceeding 500,000 most of whom live in the Greater Nottingham conurbation.
Settled in the 5th century on the Roman Fosse Way, the county has a long and fascinating history. Nottingham itself has a chequered past plagued by siege, murder and mystery. Having been destroyed following the Civil War and replaced by a spectacular mansion in 1674, it was finally converted into the country’s first museum open to the public outside London, in 1875.
Sherwood Forest, made famous through its association with the legend of Robin Hood, is only a fragment of what was a much grander and larger hunting forest. English Nature designated part of the forest a National Nature Reserve in 2002 attracting over half a million visitors annually.
